Where does blue light come from?
Blue light is in sunlight, smartphones, and other electronic devices. This form of light is the short-wavelength blue/violet band of the visible light spectrum. This spectrum makes up about 35% of the sun’s electromagnetic radiation.
What blue light does to skin?
Studies suggest that blue light may penetrate skin, generate free radicals, and break down collagen. Too much blue light may also darken hyperpigmentation, especially in deeper skin tones. It is important to note that research is still ongoing in this area, and more needs to be done.
Blue light can effect the skin renewal/regeneration cycle causing more skin damage over time. One study of the effects of blue light on the skin, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in 2010, found that exposing skin to the amount of blue light we get from the sun caused more pigment, redness, and swelling than when the same person’s skin was exposed to comparable levels of UVA rays.
Blue light also compromises our beauty sleep by way of disrupting our natural circadian rhythm. Significant amounts of blue light at night? You may find it more difficult to fall asleep. As blue light affects the level of melatonin, our sleep hormone.
Research from Estée Lauder demonstrates that blue light exposure at night impacts the natural circadian rhythm of skin cells themselves. Dr Nadine Pernodet, Estée Lauder Companies’ scientific spokesperson, explains the findings of their testing: “Results indicate that exposure to blue light at night can throw skin’s natural circadian rhythm ‘out-of-sync’, causing skin cells to continue to ‘think’ it is daytime, impacting their natural night-time repair process, which can lead to visible signs of ageing, and even dark under-eye circles.”

How to protect your skin from blue light
Wear a physical (aka mineral) sunscreen that contains Zinc Oxide, like Invisible Physical Defense SPF30. This ingredient helps protect skin against blue light. It also helps protect skin against UV rays – which pose a greater known threat. Sunlight and electronic devices reach skin both indoors and out, so it’s important to protect your skin even if you’re indoors most of the day. Supplementing your skin care regimen with antioxidants like Matcha Green Tea may also help. Such antioxidants counter free radical damage that occurs from UV and visible light.
